| Abstract Scope |
Formation of the K-state in Ni–Cr systems, has previously been linked to a series of anomalous physical property measurements, with electrical resistivity, hardness and lattice parameters frequently cited as indicators of local atomic effects. Similarly, observations of serrated flow in Ni-superalloys and MPEAs have further suggested short-range order as an important contributor to alloy strengthening and deformation behaviour. However, direct correlation of local ordering to observed physical properties has yet to be investigated in great detail. Recent advancements in Total Scattering may provide a route to directly probe local order in metallic systems, yielding a firm link between properties and order.
The present work discusses the use of total scattering to characterise local order and correlates this with observations of changing mechanical, lattice and electrical properties of bulk Ni-Cr. Understanding the limitations of order characterisation via both scattering and property analysis, is critical to eliminating current ambiguities in the field. |
