| Abstract Scope |
Developing effective oxide-dispersion-strengthened steels for directed energy deposition requires feedstocks that deliver suitable solutes without costly mechanical alloying. Here, ultrasonic atomization is used as a non-mechanical alloying route to design DED-compatible elemental yttrium-bearing 316L powder for in situ oxide formation during wire–powder LDED. Arc-melted 316L feed bars containing 1 to 10 wt% Y were atomized into an LDED-relevant particle size range, then characterized by powder morphology and cross-sectional SEM/EDS to resolve Y incorporation, Ni–Y–O segregation, and particle-interior Y-rich reservoirs. Various single-track deposits were fabricated across a broad range of power–speed conditions using 316L wire and Y-doped powder, and then analyzed for melt-pool geometry, microstructure, microhardness, and oxide particle size distribution. The powders retained Y-bearing reservoirs that were transformed during laser remelting into dispersed Y–O rich oxide features within the 316L matrix. These results demonstrate ultrasonic atomization as a scalable designed-feedstock pathway for in situ ODS development in DED stainless steels. |
