Abstract Scope |
The understanding of powder flowability is important since proper management is needed for powder handling, component manufacturing, and product quality for a wide variety of applications. Powder flowability can be a foreign concept to many. Two methods used to interpret powder flow are the Carr Index and Hausner Ratio from tap densification testing, analyses developed ~ 60 years ago, . For both, increases in the Carr Index and Hausner Ratio are indicators of poorer powder flowability. In this examination, the Carr Index and Hausner Ratio are estimated for a wide variety of powder materials (e.g., ceramics, metals, food and baking ingredients) and granular shapes subjected to tap densification testing. Interpretations are offered for the efficacies of the Carr Index and Hausner Ratio based on these results |
