Abstract Scope |
A direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) could efficiently convert biomass energy to electricity while providing a CO₂ stream for utilization or sequestration. WPI is developing a DCFC consisting of a liquid metal anode, thin yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) solid electrolyte, and calcium-doped lanthanum manganite (LCM) cathode. This talk will focus on fuel production and treatment, and cell characterization. In particular, biomass pyrolysis with treatments to remove sulfur, silica, and other minerals can improve efficiency and reduce the need for metal and slag addition to maintain the alloy composition. Electrochemical characterization focuses on cyclic voltammetry and understanding of carbon transport in the anode boundary layer near the electrolyte. |
