Graphite behaves differently under tension when compared to compression. This unique behavior is difficult to capture using mathematical constitutive models. These models struggle in capturing hereditary nonlinear inelastic behavior. Ability to accurately capture nonlinear deformations helps in predicting the material behavior at elevated service temperature, operational life and overall performance of critical engineering systems. Graphite is used as an important structural component in many high temperature applications including nuclear reactors, energy storage systems and semiconductors. Here, we explore the unified viscoplastic model developed by Robinson to be able to capture the creep and plasticity interactions. This framework is extended to develop a time dependent multiaxial inelastic constitutive model for isotropic and anisotropic nuclear graphite with considerations for thermal and irradiation effects. The current model is able to predict the unique behavior of graphite under complex thermomechanical load paths. |
