| Abstract Scope |
Multi-layered armor systems (MAS) are recognized as efficient personal protection against the threat of rifle ammunition, such as caliber 7.62 mm projectiles. MAS are usually composed of a front layer, made of a ceramic tiles panel, which has the purpose to fragment the income metallic projectile and absorb part of its ballistic energy. A second layer, made of either fiber or fabric composite plate, contributes to retain most of the remaining cloud of projectile and ceramic fragments generated by the front layer ballistic impact. In the present work, this second layer was made of a timber plate (TP) as a possible cost-effective alternative for the more expensive-processed fiber/fabric polymer matrix composites, commonly used for this purpose. Ballistic tests, with MAS second layer TP against 7.62 mm ammunition revealed depth of penetration in a plastiline clay back panel, simulating a human body, less than 44 mm limit, a NIJ lethal limit. |
