| Abstract Scope |
Lightweight metastable beta titanium alloys have attracted significant attentions in the aerospace industry due to high strength, low density, and excellent toughness. Various nanostructures can form in metastable beta titanium alloys during thermal/mechanical treatments, affecting their microstructure evolution under different service environment. Understanding these nanostructures from atomic scale is essential to design new titanium alloys with tailored properties. In this presentation, we will introduce various nanostructures in metastable titanium alloys. Our first study identifies an orthorhombic O’ phase in modeled Ti-Mo and Ti-Mo-Al alloys. We demonstrate that the nanoscale O’ phase can form in metastable beta titanium alloys by atom shuffle mechanism. In the second case, we characterize the nanostructures in a compositionally gradient Ti-Fe alloy and identify the nanoscale domains with different structure from hexagonal omega phase. Our studies provide new insights into the design of next-generation titanium alloys through microstructure engineering. |
