| Abstract Scope |
The chunk effect, which is associated with localized and phase-dependent dissolution processes, is an important factor influencing the utilization efficiency of Mg–air battery anodes. In this work, a phase-field modelling approach is employed to investigate the interplay between microstructural geometry and electrochemical kinetics during localized dissolution. A time-scale-based framework is developed to assess chunk susceptibility under different microstructural and discharge conditions. Based on the modelling results, susceptibility maps are constructed to illustrate trends associated with chunk-prone and chunk-resistant regimes. The modelling predictions are further assessed through experimental observations. The results provide insight into the factors governing chunk formation and offer guidance for the microstructural optimization of Mg alloy anodes to improve their utilization efficiency. |
