Neutron-irradiation effects on mechanical properties of SiC composites are critical for assessing their feasibility and lifetime in accident-tolerant core structures of light water reactors. A knowledge gap currently exists regarding the onset and progression of radiation-induced mechanical degradation at high neutron doses.
Nuclear-grade SiC composites with different fiber/matrix interface microstructures were irradiated up to 30 displacements per atom (dpa) at the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, to investigate the degradation process and identify the underlying mechanisms.
Certain SiC composites retained their flexural strengths after neutron irradiation up to 30 dpa, contrary to degradation behavior reported in the literature for similar SiC composites. The carbon-interphase microstructural differences were found to explain the material-dependent mechanical degradation after irradiation based on the residual stress calculations.
