| Abstract Scope |
Following the development of the AP60 smelting platform at Arvida, the AP61 program was launched to increase amperage —thus higher productivity—while preserving thermal balance, process stability, and cell life. The work was conducted on four AP60 booster cells to define and validate a 608 kA operating point under industrial conditions. The trial followed Rio Tinto’s cell development methodology, combining engineering design, industrial piloting, operating-window assessment, and dedicated measurement campaigns. The AP61 package included inclined anode slots, adapted magnetic compensation, and revised operating practices. Target conditions were progressively achieved, stabilized, and validated during extended operation, including thermo-electrical campaigns and a six-month performance evaluation. Results demonstrated that AP60 Generation 3 cells can operate at 608 kA with adequate thermal protection and stable behavior. Performance, thermal measurements, and ledge observations confirmed operation within the intended window, supporting AP61 as a validated technology option for future smelter projects. |
