| Abstract Scope |
The stability of retained austenite against deformation-induced transformation is dependent upon microstructural characteristics both intrinsic and extrinsic to the austenite. This stability can be characterized as a critical stress to form martensite or as a temperature corresponding to peak strengthening and transformation toughening. These techniques detect the start of martensite formation by direct-observed austenite transformation or yield-point reversal behavior, respectively. In the present investigation, elastic lattice strain data from in situ neutron diffraction of a 7.17Mn-0.14C steel will be utilized to evaluate austenite stability using the direct-observed characterization technique. These data will be combined with ex situ microstructural and mechanical characterization of austenite and matrix characteristics to facilitate a discussion of computational and experimental methods for evaluating austenite stability using in situ diffraction data. |
