Flexoelectricity generated by gradient-strain has emerged as a promising route for mechanically controlling polarization in ferroelectrics, yet its influence on intrinsic ferroelectric domain structures remains largely unexplored. In this study, we conducted in-situ TEM observation of bending tests on submicron-sized BaTiO3 single crystals to investigate the response of ferroelectric nanodomains under a steep strain-gradient field on the order of 104 m-1. Under bending deformation, the initially observed 90° a-a nanodomain structure disappeared, forming a configuration separated by a 90° domain wall at the neutral plane. The polarization on the compressive side was consistently aligned with the flexoelectric field. Upon unloading, the polarization reversal induced by bending deformation caused the 90° a-a nanodomain structure to reappear in a mirror-reversed configuration relative to its initial state. These domain-switching behaviors were repeatedly observed under reversed cyclic bending, demonstrating that deterministic and reversible mechanical switching of ferroelectric nanodomains can be achieved by bending-induced flexoelectricity. |
