Abstract Scope |
Grain boundary motion is known to be strongly affected by faceting but understanding its impact on microstructure evolution remains extremely challenging for grain growth. In this talk, I discuss recent progress to understand the impact of faceting on microstructural pattern formation for the more tractable problem of ice templating where the ice-water interface exhibits both faceted and non-faceted regions growing simultaneously at very different rates. The results of phase-field simulations will illustrate the dramatic impact of faceting on the microstructures that template intricate porous structures in water mixtures, and how this impact can be understood within the general theoretical framework of spontaneous symmetry breaking.
