Abstract Scope |
In this research, we employ a combined experimental-computational method to investigate the effect of gravity on track continuity during collaborative robot (COBOT)-assisted wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of stainless steel parts. First, we find that the lack of support in the upward deposition and the molten pool instability create a bulge and hump at the first part of the deposition, as also observed by a numerical heat and fluid flow model of WAAM. However, the downward direction, along the direction of gravity, provides a better deposition than the upward direction. Second, the deposition on a curved surface is achieved by managing heat input during deposition. Third, pulse metal deposition provides a better track consistency than short circuit metal transfer, as also noticed using a high speed camera during the process. Finally, real-time waveform analysis provides insights into the connection between material deposition and resulting deposit quality. |
