Fracture is inherently an atomistic phenomenon; propagation is determined by the environment factors near the crack tip at the atomistic scale, especially in intergranular fracture. Hence, continuum methods cannot directly model local effects on fracture. However, atomistic factors could be embedded into continuum fracture models through stochasticity. This work develops a phase-field model of fracture which incorporates a localized, Gaussian-random critical energy release rate field that serves as a surrogate for the atom-scale variations that impact fracture. The parameters of the Gaussian distribution are justified based on prior observations of solute embrittlement variability. This work demonstrates the consequences of that model for the fracture toughness of a tungsten material. Repeated simulations produce a Weibull distribution of fracture toughness in which more than 83% of simulations are weaker than a nonrandom simulation. These characteristics make this model uniquely relatable to fracture experiments, enabling a new avenue of verification and uncertainty quantification. |
