Abstract Scope |
Carbon is the main reductant in production of many metals as for Ferroalloys and Silicon, the metals focused here, as well as for iron and steel. As a part of the path towards decarbonization of metal production, possibilities for gaseous reduction have become increasingly investigated with hydrogen reduction as the main focus. The fundament for this research is knowledge about gaseous reduction developed through several decades. In Norway, especially the potential for use of methane, but also hydrogen and other gases has been studied. This paper will present some of methods and results from investigations of use of gas in metal production at SINTEF and NTNU. This will include both prereduction and preheating of different ores, with hydrogen, CO or gas mixtures, use of hydrogen plasma, deposition of carbon from methane on raw materials and use of deposited carbon as reductant as well as other methods. |
