| Abstract Scope |
One of the critical objectives of alloy selection for welding applications is to minimize the risk of solidification cracking. Various metrics for quantifying solidification cracking susceptibility (SCS) based on thermodynamic simulations have been proposed to facilitate this task. While each metric has been validated to varying degrees, a broader consensus on the application of these tools has yet to be reached. Part of the challenge is a lack of characterization of the sources of variability and uncertainty in these models. A broad evaluation of several prevalent SCS metrics is performed using solidification simulation data generated using the classic Scheil model, fast diffusers, a ferrite to austenite transformation, back diffusion, and solute trapping. These results highlight the need for judicious selection of the solidification model and parameters when designing weldments. |
