| Abstract Scope |
The growing demand for high-performance permanent magnets in electric-drive systems, coupled with supply-chain vulnerabilities associated with rare-earth (RE) elements, has created an urgent need for alternative magnets. RE-free MnBi magnet is particularly attractive because of its unique positive temperature coefficient of coercivity, making it well suited for high-temperature applications where coercivity is more critical than magnetization.
Despite these advantages, the fabrication of high-purity MnBi and its consolidation into dense bulk magnets remain significant challenges. In this work, we address these challenges through a comprehensive investigation of MnBi synthesis, processing, and microstructure control. The approach integrates controlled thermal processing with targeted microstructure engineering to stabilize the low-temperature MnBi phase and preserve high coercivity in both warm-compacted and bonded magnet forms.
The resulting MnBi magnets exhibit promising magnetic performance and demonstrate strong potential for industrial motor applications, which provide a viable pathway toward the development of sustainable, high-temperature, RE-free permanent magnet technologies. |
