| Abstract Scope |
A comprehensive methodology was proposed to predict uniaxial fatigue life, non-uniaxial fatigue life and their variabilities for hypo-eutectoid steels through virtual microstructure-based elasto-viscoplasticity modeling. Statistically equivalent synthetic microstructures were generated to represent hypo-eutectoid steels and crystal plasticity (CP)-based elasto-viscoplastic constitutive models were developed for primary ferrite and pearlite phases. Synthetic microstructure-based crystal plasticity finite element method simulations were performed for stress-controlled uniaxial, torsional, and in-phase and out-of-phase axial plus torsional fatigue loading conditions, and cyclic increments of fatigue indicator parameters (dFIPs) were extracted from fatigue-simulated microstructures for the local fatigue damage quantification. Four different FIPs were adopted and their fatigue life predictabilities were assessed. Special efforts were made to predict non-uniaxial fatigue life from modeling of uniaxial fatigue life and the variability of fatigue life. The proposed methodology can be extended to assess fatigue of structural materials enabling the design of more durable launching mechanisms for hydrate-based fire suppression systems. |
