Understanding atomic-scale corrosion mechanisms in molten fluoride salts is critical for designing durable structural materials for advanced nuclear and energy systems. Here, we investigate early-stage FLiNaK-induced degradation in an epitaxial Fe-8Cr alloy film using high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. The results reveal localized salt penetration, selective Cr depletion from the alloy, and Cr enrichment near the salt-affected interface. Atom probe tomography further shows salt–metal intermixing and strong Cr-F chemical association, consistent with the greater thermodynamic stability of Cr fluorides relative to Fe fluorides. Atomic-resolution imaging also reveals lattice rotation and partial coherency between the solidified salt and Fe-Cr lattice, indicating crystallographic accommodation at the evolving interface. Overall, this study provides atomic-scale insight into how interfacial chemistry and structure govern molten-salt corrosion pathways in structural alloys. |
