Abstract Scope |
Competition between different deformation mechanisms in nanoscale materials determines their plastic behaviours. Understanding the transition among different mechanisms is critical for controlling the mechanical properties of these materials. Here, by in-situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy observation as experimental molecular dynamics approach, the orientation-dependent plasticity was observed in body-centered cubic tungsten nanowires. Twinning-dominated plastic behaviour and discrete shear-band plasticity in tungsten nanowires were found, which was contributed to the competition between twinning and dislocation-slip under different loading orientation. Twinning and shear band nucleation and growth process at atomic scale have been captured under in-situ HRTEM, which are different from FCC twinning process. |
