| Abstract Scope |
Pyrite (FeS2) is an abundant mineral in base-metal sulfide deposits (Cu, Pb, Zn); during separation, it tends to float indiscriminately contaminating the concentrate and causes economic or environmental issues. This study tested potassium biphthalate (BFT) as a pyrite-depressing reagent—an alternative to cyanide, which is widely used in the industry but can be toxic. The results show that while pyrite flotation at pH 6, 9, 11, and 12 with BFT dosages of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/L generally depresses the FeS2 surface, the greatest degree of pyrite depression occurs at pH 11.0 with 0.25 g/L of BFT and a pulp potential of -21 mV, resulting in a concentrate containing only 9.1% w/w pyrite. This occurs because the surface adsorption of BFT alters the pyrite surface properties, shifting them from a hydrophobic to a hydrophilic state. |
