| Abstract Scope |
Reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steels are the leading candidates for fusion first-wall/blanket (FW/B) structures, especially for water/He-cooled and Pb-Li blanket designs. However, a significant lack of literature data on performance degradation of RAFM welds and heat-affected zones (HAZs) exists for fusion-relevant irradiation environments.
In this work, energetic ion irradiation experiments combined with He implantations will be utilised to compare the response of electron beam and tungsten inert gas welded EUROFER97 against the baseline material for irradiation temperatures between 300 and 550 oC.
Furthermore, the role of He concentration in High Temperature He Embrittlement and the subsequent inter-granular brittle failure due to grain boundary bubble nucleation will be characterised. The results generated in this study aim to improve the understanding of irradiation-induced degradation mechanisms in RAFM steel welds and to better understand the true operating temperature window for FW/B applications in future fusion reactor designs. |
