| Abstract Scope |
Recent advances in the development of Al-Mg-Si extrusions for automotive applications to lightweight internal combustion or battery electric vehicles will be presented. In particular, this talk will consider the influence of microstructure heterogeneities at different length scales. Examples will be provided on the effect of i) the precipitate free zone adjacent to grain boundaries and ii) the crystallographic texture gradients near weld seams in porthole die extrusions on strain localization and the onset of fracture. Finally, a perspective will be offered on how to engineer microstructures with improved resistance to fracture. |
