| Abstract Scope |
The use of additive manufacturing is rapidly coming of age in the manufacture of complicated aerospace parts. In particular, parts with many internal features that were normally machined from forged blocks or cylinders or from expensive castings are being manufactured using direct energy additive processes. With the advent of these new manufacturing processes comes the uncertainty concerning the quality of the components. This paper will show the additive manufacturing processes and some discontinuities identified. Test methods, including liquid penetrant, computed digital radiography and computed tomography that were able to identify indications and provide feedback to the manufacturing and design engineers on several projects will be highlighted as well as the work being performed on the development of new standards and application of AWS D20.1 requirements. |
