| Abstract Scope |
The present study investigates the hot deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of a third-generation Al-Cu-Li alloy under various thermomechanical conditions. Cylindrical specimens were machined from a cast Al-Cu-Li ingot and hot-compressed at 360 °C, 430 °C, and 500 °C, to nominal height reductions of 30%, 50%, and 70%, under a constant strain rate of 0.05 s⁻¹. After deformation, the samples were subjected to a T6 heat treatment. The final microstructures were examined by optical microscopy, and Vickers micro hardness tests were conducted to evaluate mechanical properties. The results show that increasing the deformation temperature and strain enhances the hardness of the alloy, due to mechanisms such as dynamic recovery/recrystallization and work hardening. However, when the temperature approached the alloy’s solidus (around 500 °C), excessive grain growth occurred, leading to a reduction in strength. Likewise, an imbalance of high temperature and high strain caused microstructural coarsening. |
