The constraint factor, also known as the Tabor factor, relates hardness to yield strength, and a value of 3 is often used for metals in conventional mechanical testing regimes. This work reanalyzes recent impact indentation data and identifies evidence for a much higher apparent Tabor factor at extreme strain rates. Properties such as strength and hardness are extracted using finite element modeling of alumina-on-Cu impact, which shows that this behavior can be reproduced with sufficiently strong rate hardening, captured in this work by a phonon-drag-controlled plasticity. Such hardening redistributes plastic strain fields and reshapes the residual crater geometry, resulting in an upturn in dynamic hardness. It is also shown, in indentation tests across a wide range of strain rates, that the hardness upturn observed at extreme strain rates results from a combined effect of a true increase in strength and an increase in the apparent Tabor factor. |
