Abstract Scope |
With increasing interest in Gen IV nuclear reactors to satisfy the growing energy demands in the 21st century, uranium carbides with refractory metal additions are considered as candidate fuels due to their high-temperature and corrosion resistant properties. However, a thorough assessment of kinetic effects is essential to understanding microstructural evolution during fabrication processes and operation. In combination with experimental and ab-initio methods, an atomic mobility database for all phases in the U-C-X (X = Nb, Mo, Ti) system was developed. Mobility assessments with uncertainty quantification and multi-phase diffusion simulations, enabled by recent developments in the open-source Kawin software, showed relatively good agreement with available experimental data. The comprehensive and self-consistent thermo-kinetic database developed in this work, and its predictive capability of microstructural and phase evolution, will be critical to the development and lifetime assessment of next generation nuclear fuels. |
