Abstract Scope |
Casthouse decarbonization is an important pillar in the aluminium industry’s effort to reach zero carbon emissions. Conventional gas-fired burners, typically used in casthouses, are the primary source of carbon emissions in the casthouse. In recent years, several stakeholders in the industry have been evaluating retrofittable solutions, such as replacing natural gas with hydrogen or even substituting traditional burners with plasma torches, to reduce carbon emissions. While small-scale experimental trials have been conducted by various groups to compare burner technologies, industrial-scale evaluations remain very limited.
In this article, we use well-validated numerical tools to compare different burners at industrial scale: cold air burner (natural gas and hydrogen), oxy-fuel burner (hydrogen) and plasma torch (high and low enthalpy). This can provide a framework for detailed comparison between different technologies and support the industry in their efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. |
