| Abstract Scope |
Extruded Mg alloys usually exhibit pronounced tension–compression yield asymmetry, primarily due to strong basal texture related {10–12} extension twinning polarity. Here, an unusual double-peak texture was found in an extruded Mg-Gd-Zn alloy, with two basal-pole intensity peaks separated by a large angle and significantly reduced tension-compression yield symmetry. EBSD characterization of the extrusion remainder showed clear double-peak texture formation during extrusion. Subsequent deformation induced loading-dependent texture evolution suggested that the near-orthogonal texture components provided complementary grain populations for activating {10–12} extension twinning under opposite loading modes, thereby reducing yield asymmetry. This double-peak texture might originate from solute-modified slip and twinning during extrusion under specific Zn/Gd atomic ratio. This work highlights a texture-engineering route for improving mechanical symmetry of extruded Mg alloys. |
