| Abstract Scope |
Tungsten (W) is a promising candidate material for plasma-facing components in fusion energy technologies. Carbon inevitably forms in fusion devices, especially when plasma-facing surfaces are in close proximity to carbon-containing components. Carbon diffusion and segregation along W grain boundaries (GBs) can exacerbate W’s tendency to intergranular fracture. We investigate the effect of C GB segregation in W on the cohesive strength and structural phase transformations at representative high-angle GBs. The computations use a new moment-tensor interatomic potential for the W-C system. The results can guide efforts to mitigate embrittlement in W-based plasma-facing components in fusion technologies. This work was performed under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Energy by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract DE-AC52-07NA27344. |
