| Abstract Scope |
This presentation will discuss a modern statement of the first law of thermodynamics which expresses the change in the internal energy of a simple system as result of the exchanges of entropy, volume, and amount of chemical matter, instead of the conventional heat and work interactions, between the system and its surroundings. We will demonstrate that this modern statement of the first law can be conveniently applied to quantify both irreversible internal processes within a system and irreversible exchange processes between the system and its surroundings and to clarify numerous confusing statements in existing textbooks on the applications of first and second laws of thermodynamics to irreversible processes. |
