Alloying magnesium with rare-earth (RE) elements, especially yttrium (Y), has been shown to weaken sharp basal textures and improve ductility but the mechanisms behind these enhancements remain to be elucidated. To understand these mechanisms, we develop a moment tensor potential (MTP) for Mg-Y, which accurately reproduces the mechanical and structural properties, and generalized stacking fault energies. We model Mg-Y alloys with various solute distributions to analyze the effects of yttrium on defect energies, pyramidal <c+a> dislocations, and plasticity using molecular dynamics simulations. These predictions are compared to the modified embedded-atom method (MEAM). These findings provide further fundamental insight into the role of Yttrium in modifying magnesium’s deformation behavior. |
