Abstract Scope |
Fe impurity is detrimental to the corrosion resistance of pure magnesium or Mg-Al based alloys. When the Fe content exceeds their Fe tolerance limit, Fe precipitates and Fe-containing secondary phase results in an exponential increase in the corrosion rate due to serious galvanic corrosion event. However, the effect of Fe content on the corrosion rate of non-Al containing Mg alloy system is not well investigated. Thus, this study explores the corrosion rate of both as-cast and heat-treated Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy system with different Fe content ranging from 30ppm to 200ppm. The corrosion rate of as-cast Mg-Zn-Ca-Mn alloy decreases as the Fe content increases due to the strong grain refining capability of Fe. Besides, the corrosion rate is independent of the Fe content after heat treatment with the complete dissolution of Ca2Mg6Zn3 secondary phase. The effect of Fe on the corrosion rate of this Mg alloy system contradicts the previous concept. |
