Abstract Scope |
Laser powder bed fusion processing windows are well established for a wide range of materials. However, challenges persist in fabricating metal matrix composites in achieving desired phases and mechanical properties, notably in cemented carbides. While conventional manufacturing techniques produce WC-Co components with WC and Co phases with low porosity, there exist challenges in terms of geometrical complexity. On the contrary, additive manufacturing techniques enable fabrication of complex geometries but often at the expense of forming additional η-phases (W₃Co₃C and W₆Co₆C) in WC-Co cermet materials. The present study focuses on evolution of η-phases in laser-based additively fabricated WC-17Co cermet and the role of processing parameters in WC, Co and W-Co-C phases evolution. As mechanical properties of the laser additively fabricated cermets were observed to be influenced by the presence of fraction of η-phases in these materials, optimization of processing of WC-Co cermets was explored for associated phase-property correlations. |
