Scandium (Sc) is a promising alloying element for aluminum (Al) alloys as it generally enhances mechanical performance and heat resistance. When applying Sc to the aluminum-copper (Al-Cu) system, however, the mechanical performance often falls short of expectations, and the corrosion resistance deteriorates. This unexpected performance is challenging to interpret, given that the addition of Sc can introduce complex phase evolution related to its less-explored diffusion kinetics and interaction with Cu during heat treatment. In this study, we reveal and quantify the Sc diffusion behavior and the associated phase evolution in A206 alloy during heat treatment with in situ techniques. The results indicate that the diffusion of Sc and Cu can be mutually impeded, leading to a heterogeneous distribution of secondary phases. This work provides new insights into the diffusion-governed phase transformations in Al-Cu-Sc alloys, offering valuable guidance for the design of high-performance and corrosion-resistant Al alloys. |
