Abstract Scope |
The steel industry is under increasing pressure to reduce CO2 emissions across all production stages, with ironmaking and steelmaking processes being the primary contributors. To address society’s demands and promote sustainable production, the increased utilization of ferrous scrap in electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) processes is highly encouraged. However, the presence of tramp elements in molten steel derived from scrap has become a significant challenge for both steelmakers and metallurgists. In this presentation, a comprehensive review of available thermodynamic data for tramp elements including Cu, Sn, etc. in molten steel is presented based on published literature. Furthermore, currently available CALPHAD-type thermodynamic databases are examined with a focus on their applicability to computational approaches. The thermodynamic behavior of these tramp elements is discussed in detail, and potential strategies for their removal are explored, with the goal of supporting the development of a more sustainable steelmaking process. |
