| Abstract Scope |
Concrete is a widely used construction material that has been aging and used past its expected lifespan. Traditional concrete repair methods are effective, but they are temporary solutions that require frequent maintenance and does not solve the root problems. Biological materials offer a promising alternative because they can precipitate cement to bind the concrete together for long term repair. In this study, we leveraged encapsulation and gelcasting expertise to introduce enzymes into cracks. Results indicate that enzymes can withstand concrete’s basic environment and can increase the strength of crack-filling solutions.
