This talk presents work that shows how static external magnetic fields influence the melt pool, key hole formation, microstructure, and properties of laser-welded steels. Applying an external magnetic field can control melt pool flows and indirectly influence keyhole morphology and dynamics. The induced Lorentz force, comprising Seebeck and damping components, plays a crucial role in the melt pool dynamics, depending on temperature gradient, flow rates, and magnetic field orientation and magnitude. High-speed synchrotron X-ray demonstrates these changes in melt pool flows and keyhole fluctuactions, where an external magnetic field can introduce more process stability in laser welding of steel while also improving mechanical properties. |
