| Abstract Scope |
During the electrochemical reduction of spent nuclear fuel, UO2 is reduced at the cathode while oxygen is evolved at the anode in a molten LiCl-Li2O electrolyte. Platinum is currently used as the anode, however due to corrosion and high cost of the platinum, less expensive or more inert alternatives are needed to improve the economic feasibility of pyroprocessing. This study will present results using a Ruthenium alloy as an inert oxygen evolving anode in LiCl-Li2O. Electrochemical data as well as post testing surface characterization results including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy will be presented. This work was supported by the Department of Energy (DOE) and US Nuclear Regulatory Commission under contracts DE-AR0001697 and 31310023M0036, respectively. C.M. and T.S are supported by DOE’s Nuclear Energy Graduate Fellowship under award DE-NE0009105. |
