| Abstract Scope |
Using a phosphorus-rich leachate—a byproduct of the biogenic leaching of phosphate rock—and calcium recovered from eggshells, calcium-magnesium phosphates were synthesized via chemical precipitation (pH 11), demonstrating the feasibility of transforming these wastes and byproducts into value-added materials. The stirring speed applied to this recovered solution proved decisive for the resulting mineralogy: 300 rpm favored bobierrite (98.1%), while 400 rpm promoted collinsite (72%) along with calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (23.9%). FTIR and SEM-EDS confirmed that, from these recycled raw materials—phosphorus from phosphate rock and calcium from eggshells—biomimetic Ca–Mg mixed phosphates are obtained. Heat treatment (400–1200°C) revealed the progressive evolution of these recovered phosphates into stable crystalline phases (whitlockite, Mg-TCP), demonstrating that the recovered phosphorus and calcium can be adjusted compositionally and structurally, with potential for biomedical applications. |
