Abstract Scope |
Bauxite Residue (BR) presents a significant challenge in the aluminum industry due to its large volume. This poses problems because of the limited storage space available around the refineries and the necessity to comply with environmental regulations.
Geomega Resources Inc. has developed and is scaling up a sustainable multi-step process for reducing the volume of BR by its valorizing it through the recovery of Aluminum, Sodium and silicon. Reagents are recycled to avoid any effluent. This process has successfully valorized seven different BR samples with various chemical compositions from different collections around the world.
This paper presents pilot-scale testworks on two distinct BR samples. A volume reduction of over 55% was achieved, and the process economy was improved by generating marketable off-takes including Smelter Grade Alumina (SGA) production, caustic soda, and cement grade silica. Additionally, a Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) are provided. |
