Spinodal decomposition in Alnico alloys forms a nanoscale two-phase microstructure that strongly controls magnetic performance through the morphology and alignment of Fe–Co-rich domains. However, most predictive models of magnetic-field-assisted decomposition have relied on simplified binary systems. Here, a multicomponent phase-field model is developed for the quaternary Fe–Al–Ni–Co system by coupling CALPHAD-based thermodynamics, multicomponent diffusion, magnetic free energy, and elastic coherency strain. The chemical free energy is described using Redlich–Kister expansions fitted to CALPHAD data, while magnetic effects are included through composition-dependent magnetization and a scalar potential formulation. The model captures key experimental features, including α₁/α₂ phase partitioning, nanoscale modulation wavelengths, and field-induced alignment. Without a magnetic field, decomposition produces isotropic bicontinuous patterns, whereas an applied field drives anisotropic coarsening into aligned lamellar domains. The field also alters phase compositions and connectivity, demonstrating that magnetic energy affects both morphology and thermodynamic partitioning in Alnico alloys. |
