| Abstract Scope |
Dislocations are known to form hierarchical networks that set the properties and dynamics of metals, but our understanding of these dynamics in bulk materials is limited, especially under extreme conditions. My group develops X-ray microscopes to image dislocations under non-classical conditions. Using the ultrafast and ultrabright pulses available at X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs), we recently revealed a new view dislocations and crystal plasticity during shock waves. Using in-situ radiography we directly image the first experimental view of dislocations moving faster than the speed of sound (transonic dislocations) – providing the first validation of phonon radiation under these unusual conditions. I will then show how our subsequent studies have given deeper insights into the mechanisms of shock plasticity, enabled by ultrafast diffraction and imaging methods. Our results offer key insights into the mechanisms that underlie strengthening effects in the hardest naturally occurring material on the planet. |
