| Abstract Scope |
In aluminum electrolysis production, the process temperature is maintained at 940-960℃, resulting in high energy consumption and carbon emissions while leading to greater heat loss in electrolytic cells and more severe corrosion of cell linings. In 2023, global primary aluminum production reached 70.71 million tons, consuming over 14,000 kWh of electricity per ton produced and emitting 14.8 tons of CO2. Low temperature aluminum electrolysis technology offers a practical solution for reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions. While meeting required operating temperatures, a 10℃ decrease in electrolysis temperature saves approximately 140 kWh/t of energy, while a 0.1 V reduction in cell voltage yields an additional savings of about 320 kWh/t. Electrolytes are pivotal to advancing low-temperature aluminum electrolysis technology. This study reviews research progress across potassium low-temperature molten salt electrolyte systems to provide theoretical foundations and technical guidance for developing innovative, low energy consumption, low carbon emission electrolysis systems. |
