Abstract Scope |
The iron and steel sector is a critical industry with supply chains that stretch the globe. Greenhouse gas and criteria air pollutant emissions stem from the sector consumption of energy, and emissive processes including mine blasting and the direct reduction of iron ore. Hydrogen can play a critical role in decarbonizing iron and steelmaking, as both a source of energy and as a reducing agent. This presentation provides an overview of the iron and steel sector, with an emphasis on processes and global trends in technology investments, followed by a discussion of existing and emerging processes and applications of hydrogen. Herein, I discuss projections of hydrogen consumption at mining sites in the United States, as well as hydrogen consumption in coupled and decoupled DRI-EAF steelmaking facilities. |
