Abstract Scope |
Aluminum alloy AA6061 is widely used in many industrial applications, and recycling of this alloy is critical to its sustainability. Iron is considered as an impurity for AA6061 and its content generally increases after recycling. This study investigated the hot tearing susceptibility (HTS) in AA6061 with different Fe contents (0.3wt.% and 0.7wt.%) during solidification using hot tearing testing and CALPHAD (CALculation of Phase Diagrams) modeling. A weighted average hot tearing index was applied to evaluate HTS in these alloys. It was found that increasing Fe content greatly reduced the HTS, with the weighted average hot tearing index reduced from ~3 in AA6061-0.3Fe to ~1.3 in AA6061-0.7Fe. The higher Fe led to the formation of β-Al5FeSi phase that distributed in the eutectic region provided extra feeding into the gap between dendrites, preventing cracking initiation and propagation. The results offer a new insight into hot tearing prevention in recycled aluminum alloys. |
