A coupled finite element and physically based microstructure model has been developed for predicting microstructure evolution during industrial multi-pass hot rolling of aluminum alloys. Local thermomechanical histories obtained from finite element simulations are used as input for a mean-field model formulated using an ensemble-of-grains approach, where grain evolution is derived from the balance between stored free energy and dissipated power during grain-boundary migration. The model simultaneously predicts evolution of grain size distribution, recrystallization fraction, grain pancaking, and dislocation density during thermomechanical processing. The proposed framework is validated for EN-AW-1050 aluminum alloy by comparison with EBSD measurements obtained at the surface, quarter thickness, and strip center before and after industrial hot rolling. The predicted microstructural evolution shows good agreement with experimental observations, demonstrating that the model successfully captures the through-thickness microstructure evolution and provides a robust framework for accurate process simulation and optimization of industrial hot rolling schedules. |
