| Abstract Scope |
This work focuses on the fabrication of water atomized (WA) nickel alloy 740H parts for solar receiver applications by exploring various process parameters. The use of WA metal powders can be a cost-effective alternative to inert gas atomized (GA) powders in laser powder bed fusion (PBF-LB) additive manufacturing (AM). WA powders contain higher amounts of oxygen and are more irregular in shape compared to GA powders. To compare the GA and WA powder behavior, various flow tests and dynamic particle imaging results will be discussed. This project investigates the effect of PBF-LB process parameters on part density, creep, and tensile properties using WA 740H feedstock powder. This work will also explore various aging steps for optimal heat treatment for this alloy. As a baseline, the WA 740H mechanical properties are compared to GA alloy 282 parts – another Ni-based alloy used to fabricate heat exchangers and solar receivers. |
