Abstract Scope |
As a small island developing state, the presence of industrial operations for bauxite mining and alumina refining, necessitates special focus for environmental governance and the national sustainable development objectives. In particular, the long-term management of bauxite residue sites require emphasis for safe remediation and the potential for the recovery and reuse the chemical components found therein.
In Jamaica, the closure planning objectives are evolving and industry initiatives such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) has to be internalized in the context of social and environmental objectives, the regulatory framework and scarce funding to stimulate reuse options.
The need for coherence between environmental monitoring objectives and key sustainability indicators, such as protection of water supply and working with communities, drives the environmental management framework for bauxite residue in Jamaica. |
